Saroche is owned by Kevin Tickell who has cruised extensively on board in the inland waterways of Europe and has spent several years on board a luxury motor yacht based in the Mediterranean. He has a deep love of the waterways, especially throughout France, which he has made his home - spending winters in the Camargue and summers in Burgundy. He also has a passion for good food and fine wines and has designed Saroche around this concept so that passengers can experience the true flavours of France whilst travelling on the barge.

The specially selected crew of four, comprising captain, chef de cuisine, guide and hostess, have years of experience in hotel barging and catering and combine this experience to ensure that cruising on board Saroche is a relaxing, comfortable, informative and gourmet experience. Passengers, who are made to feel at home and rapidly become friends, appreciate their friendly, cheerful personalities and sense of humour. Kevin is committed to offering guests not only quality in terms of the barge and its amenities, but also flexibility with regard to cruising, excursions and the food and beverages on board.

Cruising routes allow for 3 to 4 hours cruising per day, stopping each evening either in one of the towns mentioned in the itineraries or in a country village, depending on guests' preferences. Wherever possible cruises can be tailored to fit in with passengers' requirements. It is the Saroche Barge Company's aim to provide a cruise tailored for you. Guests are warmly welcomed on board and during the Champagne reception are encouraged to regard Saroche as their cruising home.

The Boat and the design

Saroche was built on a classic Luxemotor hull. This hull design was the first commercial barge design which was purpose built to be driven by internal combustion engine power only. Hence Luxe (luxury) motor.

This design of hull was popular in Holland during the 1920’s and 1930’s most of the hulls were built at lengths of 25 to 30 metres. Saroche is one of the few remaining 39metres hulls left afloat.

These barges were built to carry various cargoes from food stuff such as grain though to coal, steel, sand and gravel. Saroche was certainly used in dredging operations in her working life and hauled animal food in pellet form during her final years as a commercial barge.

Kevin designed the conversion of Saroche to be sympathetic to her working history and it was of upmost importance that she remained a ‘barge’ and not a floating box or caravan as so many conversions end up looking like.

Kevin spent 18 months looking for the correct hull shape and three years completing the conversion to his satisfaction. Over the years small changes have been made to Saroche which Kevin believes has improved the experience for the guests but the original principle of being true to her past still applies.

Saroche is generally accepted to be one of if not the most beautiful barges cruising the inland waterways of France.
